John Travolta Biography,

Career

Travolta moved across the Hudson River to New York City after dropping out of school and landed a role in the touring company of the musical “Grease.” Around the same time, he landed his breakout role as Vinnie Barbarino in the ABC television sitcom “Welcome Back, Kotter” (1975-1979).

In July 1976, Travolta had a hit single called “Let Her In,” which peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In the following years, he appeared in the television film “The Boy in the Plastic Bubble,” as well as two of his most memorable film roles: Tony Manero in “Saturday Night Fever” (1977) and Danny Zuko in “Grease” (1978). He bounced back in 1980, riding a nationwide country music craze that followed his hit film “Urban Cowboy.”

During this time, he turned down leading roles in films like “American Gigolo” and “Splash,” which went to Richard Gere and Tom Hanks instead. He played a professional dancer in “Staying Alive” (1983), for which he lost 20 pounds.

Travolta co-starred in “Look Who’s Talking” in 1989, which grossed $297 million, making it his most successful film since “Grease.”

Following Pulp Fiction, he played a movie-buff loan shark in “Get Shorty” (1995), a factory worker in “White Man’s Burden” (1995), and an ordinary man with extraordinary abilities in “Phenomenon” (1996).

Travolta starred in and co-produced the science fiction film “Battlefield Earth” in 2000, which was based on L. Ron Hubbard’s novel of the same name. He portrayed the villainous leader of a group of aliens who enslave humanity on a bleak future Earth.

The film received almost unanimously negative reviews and performed horribly at the box office. It also earned him two Razzie nominations.

Following his wife Kelly Preston’s death in July 2020, actor John Travolta hinted that he would put his career on hold. He mispronounced Idina Menzel at the 86th Academy Awards, calling her “Adele Dazeem.” Menzel sang “Let It Go,” the award-winning song from the Disney animated film “Frozen.”
