Biography of David Schwimmer

David Lawrence Schwimmer (born on November 2, 1966) is a comedian, actor, director, and producer from the United States. He came to popularity as Ross Geller in the comedy Friends, for which he got a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Primetime Emmy nomination.

In 1995, Schwimmer was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

David Schwimmer made his television debut in “A Deadly Silence” (1989) and followed this with roles in “L.A. Law and The Wonder Years”. In 1994, he was cast as Ross Geller in NBC’s situation comedy “Friends”, a series that revolved around a group of friends who live near each other in Manhattan.

“Friends” debuted in September 1994, and was watched by almost 22 million American viewers. He earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 1995 for his performance.

Schwimmer starred in his first leading film role with Gwyneth Paltrow in “The Pallbearer”. Critics dismissed the film as a poor imitation of The Graduate.

He was offered a role alongside Tommy Lee Jones in the 1997 science-fiction comedy “Men in Black” after Chris O’Donnell turned down the role, but turned it down because of a prior commitment.

Schwimmer’s first film role was in 1997’s “Kissing a Fool”, in which he played Max, a dapper, smart-mouthed ladies’ man. He later appeared opposite Woody Allen and Sharon Stone in Alfonso Arau’s comedy “Picking Up the Pieces”.

Schwimmer appeared as Captain Herbert M. Sobel in the HBO World War II drama “Band of Brothers” in 2001. Later that year, he starred as Yitzhak Zuckerman in the war drama “Uprising”, which was based on the historical events of the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. From 2003 to 2004, Schwimmer played himself in HBO’s comedy series “Curb Your Enthusiasm”.

After Friends, Schwimmer appeared in the indie drama “Duane Hopwood” in 2005. He portrayed Melman, a hypochondriac giraffe, in the computer-animated picture “Madagascar” the same year (2005).

The film garnered mixed reviews, although critics praised Schwimmer’s portrayal. It was a commercial triumph, grossing $532 million worldwide, and was one of 2005’s greatest hits. He portrayed a teacher on stage who sees four ex-girlfriends before settling down.

In 2008, he made his Off-Broadway directorial debut with “Fault Lines”, a production of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town. He directed his second feature, Trust, starring Clive Owen and Catherine Ke. Schwimmer played himself in the sixth season of HBO’s “Entourage”.
